- WITH YASD - Yet Another Scrolling Demo
-
- 13 January 1995
-
- =========================================================================
-
- WE ARE ... The AMiga Users of Calgary, THE resource centre for Amiga
- owners in Calgary (and Western Canada for that matter). And we just
- turned eight and celebrated with our 100th Meeting!
-
- AMUC's was founded in October 1986 with a starting membership of
- about 30. We now number approximately 220. We have hosted two large
- computer shows: the Amiga Computer Expo in 1991 and AmiJam'93. We
- have produced and marketed three CD-ROMs. We are known for our
- outings at Denny's, The White Spot and the Pied Pickle. The AMUC Cow
- is a revered idol. And our spirit is still strong after eight years.
-
-
- CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
-
- Our General Meeting on December 21, 1994 reflected that spirit.
- Plenty of AMUCers turned up to see what their club, and the Amiga, had
- done over the years. Dale took us down memory lane with a
- presentation on the first days of Hi-Toro, the Lorraine and the
- familiar Amiga. Steve (is he the "first" Steve or the "other"
- Steve?) entertained us with the Amiga's work and play in schools,
- filling many greedy paws with prizes. Myron discussed the Amiga in
- video production. Jeff and Ken contributed the comic relief and MC'ing.
- And John, our Chairman, interrupted every fifteen minutes or so to give
- out more and more door prizes. Just about everyone in the room went
- home with something!
-
- Our 100th also marked the official release of our "Second and Third
- CD-ROM" set.
-
- We made commemorative T-Shirts for the occasion, but since we
- couldn't be sending those out to everyone in the Amiga community we
- decided to do this instead.
-
-
- THE (^second) SCROLLING DEMO: BEHIND THE SCREAMS
-
- Back in 1987, Stephen Vermeulen (then Chairman) and Steve Jeans (then
- Newsletter Editor, Art SIG Chairman, and Man About Town) put together
- what was then a unprecedented achievement -- a 32-colour 2400×200
- scrolling demo. It consisted of one behemoth bitmap (created in
- Stephen's Express Paint) and a custom scroller (by guess who?).
- We thought it was about time to do it again.
-
- Armed with a Video Toaster, a video camera and a gigabyte of hard
- drive we set out to capture as many members' physogs as possible
- (when they weren't stuffing them with cake). Oh.. we also got both
- cakes in the picture too!
-
- This was the easy part.
-
- What followed was John and I locking ourselves in his studio for
- three days and putting ADPro, Brilliance, TVPaint jr, DPaint (and our
- persistance) to the ultimate test. That test was to take 40MB of
- Framestores and cohabit them into one 7100×400 24-bit IFF. The
- backgrounds on every Framestore was painted out using Brilliance and
- TV Paint jr. Taking a scan of the night-lit Calgary skyline, we
- created the backdrop for the group. Each member's pic was then
- imported into TrueBrilliance, scaled and plunked down on the digital
- canvas. TrueBrilliance's multiple brushes and custom stencil was a
- godsend during this procedure.
-
- The title on the first screen of the scroll, including the Boing ball
- and text, was rendered in LightWave 3D and imported through
- Brilliance the same way.
-
- We really wanted the scroll to be in true 24-bit, but the
- resources for this distribution were a tad frightening (the virgin
- 24-bit image is available on our BBS, AMUC_Express, and soon on our
- next CD-ROM). We called on Stephen Vermeulen to update his
- ScrollBoard Express program to accompany the new format, plugged in
- our new scroll, and off it went!
-
- That's the Reader's Digest version, anyway. Let's just say the
- real-life version involved more than a few chocolate covered coffee
- beans.

- AMUC EXPRESS
-
- AMUC runs a 7-line 24-hour BBS, AMUC Express. The BBS frontend is
- the custom IceTerm software written by Stephen Vermeulen. IceTerm
- provides a multitasking point-and-click solution for painless
- telecommunicating. Including 13 CD-ROM drives we have on-line there
- is a total of approximately 10 GIGAbytes of files and information
- available for download. AMUC Express provides services for local,
- Fido and Internet Email and message groups, multi-user conference,
- doors and, thanks to multitasking, multiple uploads and downloads.
-
- AMUC Express supports 2400 baud - 28,800 baud connects. Call:
